| In the Fall of
1998 the University of Georgia converted from the quarter
system to a semester system, one of the most far-reaching
changes in University operation in the recent past. This
change is reflected throughout the 1998 UGA Fact Book,
on pages reporting data for the current fall semester and on
pages reporting both data historical and data for this first
fall semester in the University's history.
The many changes occurring in the
University's organization also are reflected in the UGA
Organizational Chart on page 26. This is the second year a
fold-out sheet has been used to better present the detailed
organizational structure. The University map at the end of the
Fact Book is also a fold-out sheet in order to
enlarge the detail.
Each year we invite response from Fact
Book users. Each year we hear from a few who suggest
changes or corrections and from many more who communicate the
increasing usefulness of this comprehensive document. We thank
you for your input.
My personal goal is to make the Fact
Book increasingly easy for any user to pick up and
understand. Like the University itself, University data are
complex, especially when viewed over time. Many Fact Book
pages, including the Table of Contents, reflect this
complexity. Explanatory notes are included to help the user,
especially when changes in definitions occur. I welcome
inquiries about the data and encourage you to call should you
have questions.
I appreciate the many individuals and
offices across the University who work with us to produce this
document. All staff within IRP contribute in some way to the Fact
Book's production, be it through programming, analyzing
reports and data, or proofing. For ten years Debbie Holliday
has been responsible for formatting and updating the pages for
publication.
All in all, production of the UGA Fact
Book is a tremendous amount of work, but it is an
extremely rewarding task. Thank you to all who help so
willingly.
